Beam Saber

Created by Austin Ramsay

Beam Saber is a Forged In The Dark game about the pilots of powerful machines in a war that dominates every facet of life. They are trying to do their part, then get out physically and mentally intact. The organizations that perpetuate The War throughout all of known space are too incomprehensibly huge to take down. There is no “winning” The War, there is only surviving it. Hopefully you can help others get out too. If you want to purchase the PDF alone, go to https://austin-ramsay.itch.io/beamsaber

Latest Updates from Our Project:

BackerKit Smoke Test
almost 4 years ago – Tue, Jun 09, 2020 at 07:39:16 PM

BackerKit replied to me sooner than expected which allows me to move onto the next step of the survey process: The Smoke Test. This is sending out the survey to only 5% of each backer level, so that I can see if there are any issues with process, the backer list, the questions, etc. Please keep your eyes open for this, and if your one of the lucky 5%, thank you for your help with moving things along.

I'll be sending out the Smoke Test a few minutes after I post this update, and hopefully people will start receiving them within the hour. If you do NOT receive a survey at this stage do NOT worry! You'll get one later after I make an update that all the surveys are going out.

I’ll give you a heads-up before I send the survey so that you can  watch for it. You don’t need to create a BackerKit account to answer  your survey. The invitation email contains a link to your personal  survey. It is important to submit your responses as quickly as you can  since I need this information to process your rewards. That said I'll send out another update a few weeks before the responses are locked so that any last minute address changes can be made.

If you need to change your survey responses, purchase add-on items,  or update your shipping information, you can click the link in your  survey email again or request your survey link under "Lost your survey?"  on our BackerKit project page. (This page will only start working after  I send the surveys out.)

If you prefer, you can contact me directly and give me your  information, but answering your survey help us get your rewards out to  you faster. BackerKit helps us save lots of time by streamlining the  survey process, automating data organization, and providing us with  pledge management software to make it easy to process your pledge reward  shipments.

If you used your Facebook credentials to log in to your Kickstarter  account, the BackerKit survey link is sent to the email address you use  for your Facebook account. If you have another email address that you  prefer to use, please contact me.

So remember: keep an eye on your email for the Smoke Test, but if you don't get it, don't worry!

Backerkit Surveys and other updates
almost 4 years ago – Mon, Jun 08, 2020 at 10:16:06 PM

A couple things this update:

1) BLACK LIVES MATTER. Full stop. Riots, looting, and injuries don't change that, nor do they devalue the protests that are happening, or forgive the police violence that is occurring. Black people in specific, and non-white people in general, face systemic racism every day of their lives and EVERYONE needs to work to dismantle those systems of oppression. If you can join a protest, do that. If you can donate to a bail fund or Black lead organization, do that (Here's a place to start). Regardless of whether you can do those you can DEFINITELY shut up and LISTEN to Black folks. Just don't say anything unless it is in clear and direct support of what a Black person has said. Listening costs you nothing.

2) I'll be sending out the Backerkit surveys soon; July 1st at the latest, but probably before then. I'll send out another Kickstarter Update RIGHT BEFORE I send them, so you don't need to keep your eye out for them yet.

3) I have FINISHED writing Beam Saber. V0.53 (unreleased) has the last big piece of writing I needed to do (a play example of an entire Mission), which is letting me move onto other tasks. The texts that are left to be added are: 1.5 example Vehicles, fiction from the contract writers, the list of Kickstarter Backers (hence the Backerkit Survey soon to get the names), and the Index. All of those are being worked on, but none can be completed by me at this time. Which has let me work on...

4) Beam Saber: The Growing Conflict! This is Beam Saber's first (and probably only) supplement. It will be available on my Itch and DriveThruRPG pages for $15 USD. It will contain 6 new Pilot playbooks, 2 new Squad playbooks, and rules that let the Players' characters create & manage a Faction. It is NOT finished; there's no art, the rules are still receiving tweaks in some spots, and in other spots are just partially complete notes at the moment. Eventually I want to add a couple more playbooks by designers I respect who have contacted me about the fan playbooks they've made, but I'll need to make sure I can afford to pay them a proper rate first. Someday AFTER this Kickstarter has been fulfilled, I'll launch another to get a print run of The Growing Conflict and make sure it turns out as wonderfully as this current one is shaping up to be. Until then, here's a small preview.

New Flag Art!
almost 4 years ago – Fri, Jun 05, 2020 at 07:54:56 PM

The Faction flags found in the rulebook have gotten a makeover thanks to Cory McDaniel. The colour versions will be in the PDF of the game, while the greyscale ones will be in the printed rulebook.

Second set of sketches for vehicle backer designs
almost 4 years ago – Thu, Jun 04, 2020 at 03:17:24 PM

Vincent has sent me the  initial sketches for the Scalpel, Opossum, and Tin Orbit, so here they are for you to see! All of these designs are provided by Vehicle Backers!

The Jovangellian Opossum
The Norrish Tin Orbit
The DFS Scalpel

Note that the designs from the first set of initial vehicle sketches  have continued to develop since I posted them here. Vincent works very quickly and iterates on the designs frequently, so I don't want to spam everyone with an update where the only difference is arm length or some such. I'll post the finished Extractor B, Agincourt, and Highwayman when all three are finished (and 2 of them already are!).

Reference Sheets Layout First Pass

Got Sasha Reneau's first pass on the layout for the reference sheets and they are looking pretty darn good! See for yourself!
